What are PDO Threads?

PDO (Mono) Threads is a new treatment that targets improvement to skin texture by tightening the skin. An polydioxanone (PDO) suture is inserted under the skin which is absorbed just like a suture is for wound closure. A non-surgical (TGA-approved) treatment, PDO Threads stimulate collagen production which in return, that fights the signs of ageing with minimal tissue trauma. This is a great treatment option for those wanting to improve skin rejuvenation, elasticity (saggy skin) and the appearance of fine wrinkles

What does the treatment involve?

At Cosmetic Effects, a full consultation is completed prior to your treatment. This includes us performing a thorough assessment to determine whether the treatment is suitable and for us to understand your concerns and work towards an achievable goal.

The treatment time of PDO Threads is 45-mintues and involves injections into the skin using a fine needle. Depending on the area, it can be performed in a mesh-like pattern or vertical-line pattern to create support (lift) to the treated area. Topical anaesthetic cream is applied prior to increase comfort. The amount of threads required is discussed during your consultation and depends on area of concern. What areas can be treated?

PDO Mono Threads are great for areas of the face where movement is involved as they are flexible and do not affect muscle movement. Those wanting fullness back to the skin with support are most favourable for this treatment as it will tighten the skin without adding volume. There are many areas that can be treated, however the most popular have been listed below.

When does it work and how long does the treatment last?

PDO Mono Threads gradually get reabsorbed by the body over 3 months. The threads produce and increase collagen and are immediately apparent lasting for up to 12 months. Depending on your desired outcome, one treatment may be all that is required. Additional treatments may be required due to the area size and amount of volume loss/skin quality.

What are the side effects and is this treatment safe?

As this treatment involves an injection, normal side effects such as swelling, bruising and tenderness can occur, lasting a few days. On some occasions, bruising can last up to 14 days. This does vary and can be as a result of your aftercare.

Before your treatment

Some advice to consider before your treatment

• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
• Avoid blood thinning medication (unless prescribed) for 3 days prior. This includes fish oil, multivitamins, aspirin, ibuprofen

After your treatment

We recommend following our aftercare guideline for an effective result and to avoid severe bruising or infection.

• No excessive heat exposure like a sauna or sun tanning for 24 hours
• No application of makeup or other skin products for 4 hours
• No facials, massaging to the treated area for 4 weeks (1 month)
• Avoid facial laser treatments for 3 months
• Avoid more invasive skin tightening treatments for 6 months
• Avoid blood thinning medication for the next 24 hours. Paracetamol is fine
• Avoid alcohol for the next 24 hours
